Technology Solutions to Improve the Conference and Training Environment

Terminix Service's Expansion Required Additional Training Spaces with Ease of Use a Priority

Terminix Service Inc. has been a leading provider of pest control and termite services in South Carolina, western North Carolina and CSRA Georgia since 1947.   Terminix out of Columbia, SC is home to the largest Terminix franchise in the U.S.  They were named in 2019 as one of the Best Places to Work in SC for the sixth consecutive year by the SC Chamber of Commerce, SC Biz News and the Best Companies Group.  In a continuing effort to improve the quality of service to their clients and providing their employees with industry leading training, a new facility was built in 2019.

THE CHALLENGE

Columbia, SC - Upon outgrowing their previous office space, Terminix Service constructed a state-of-the-art facility to house a new corporate headquarters with a centralized training center and several conference spaces.  With a wide range of users and multiple spaces available for use, Terminix Service required the technology to be simple-to-use, reliable, and intuitive for all.  The technology did not need to be a burden for the IT support staff.

A unique challenge was also presented to design a training space that was able to allow large groups of attendees to collaborate in real time with other training centers.  The room had to be able to be combined as a single large space or divided into separate rooms for different sessions to be held at the same time.

THE SOLUTION

Terminix Service approached Advanced Video Group with the challenge to design, implement, and support these new meeting and training spaces.  “As with most of our clients with multiple meeting spaces, standardization and ease-of-use are high priority for them.  It’s really simple – they want the systems to work reliability with very little strain on their IT and Network support teams,” said Adam Dox, President of Advance Video Group.  “Our focus is to make the user experience as identical as we can in all spaces in the facility.  Regardless of which room a user chooses, they have a sense of familiarity and confidence that the technology will work.”

Design and engineering teams geared up immediately to address the unique requirements laid out before them. Soon a solution was presented that included standardized conferencing rooms and a divisible training space.  Each partition in the training space can function independently or function as a single space thanks to occupancy sensors in the ceiling that recognized the layout of the room and adjust capabilities. This functionality eliminates human error and ensures the system is always properly setup.

The training space is equipped with wireless microphones for voice amplification, presentation hardware and, most importantly, audio conferencing capabilities that connect the room to other training centers.  Every attendee in the room can be engaged in the conversation with strategically placed microphones and speakers.  “We created a system for them to share presentations while creating a virtual conference phone designed to support 100 people in the room,” said Dox.  By opening or closing a partitioned wall, a presenter can address the entire room or just one side and the technology configures itself accordingly.

A unique challenge that was presented and overcame during the design phase was finding a solution for large format video displays that were able to be seen clearly in the training space from long distances with a bright lighting environment.  AVG selected HD projectors from NEC and paired them with 180” diagonal, ambient light rejection projection screens from Screen Innovations.  This projection screen technology eliminates 65% of unwanted ambient light from ceiling lights above and windows from the side.  Only on-axis light from the projectors are reflected to the viewers.  “The stigma that you must turn off your lights when using projectors has been eliminated.  This screen material now allows us to provide cost effective and high-quality viewing experiences for all clients,” explains Hunter Overton, AVG Technical Operations Manager.

In addition to the training space, five small huddle spaces and a corporate boardroom were designed

and built with presentation and conferencing capabilities that mirror each other.

THE RESULTS

The entire project was a complete success and training began immediately upon completion.  "The training capabilities of this room are seamless and allow for an excellent learning experience for everybody that uses the space. We could not have asked for a better partner than Advanced Video Group on this project" reports Tommy Sellers, IT director.
